VALPARAISO, Ind. (AP) - Authorities say a man arrested following a bank robbery in northwestern Indiana is suspected in at least 10 similar robberies in Indiana and Michigan.
A driver called Valparaiso police when he saw red smoke from an exploding dye pack fill a car leaving a Centier Bank branch Wednesday afternoon. Officers soon stopped that car and arrested 35-year-old Joseph Campbell of Elkhart.
Police say Campbell admitted to robbing the Centier branch and committing 10 other robberies, included of banks in Plymouth, Hebron, Rensselaer, Warsaw, Chesterton; and Plainwell and Paw Paw, Mich.
Plainwell officials are working with the FBI to file charges against him for the robbery in their city. The suspect handed the teller a note with specific details of what denominations of bills he wanted. The teller began handing the robber other amounts of money that weren't on his list, but he refused to take the amounts he hadn't requested.
Valparaiso Detective Sgt. Jeff Balon says Campbell picked banks randomly but avoided the Elkhart area so he wouldn't be recognized.
Campbell was being held in the Porter County Jail pending the filing of federal bank robbery charges.
