Woman arrested in road rage killing

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) - Grand Rapids police arrested a woman on Tuesday in the road-rage killing of Lance Byers, and law enforcement sources tell 24 Hour News 8 they are still looking for a second suspect -- her brother.
 
Jeanette Davis, 24, of Grand Rapids, is being held at the Kent County Jail on suspicion of murder.
 
Police arrested her a week to the day after the Feb. 21 shooting on Lafayette Avenue SE at State Street in the Heritage Hill neighborhood.

Lance Byers' mom Benita Woods and stepfather Larry Woods Sr. thanked the Grand Rapids Police Department for the arrest.
 
"Larry and myself and my family and all of those who showed support for all of us are very thankful not only to the Grand Rapids Police Department, but to those who have shown concern," said Benita Woods, a retired long-time clerk at the police department.
 
Larry Woods said police have told him they were still looking for the woman's brother, whose name was not released. He was told they have been in contact with the brother's attorney.
 
GRPD Chief Kevin Belk confirmed to 24 Hour News 8 an arrest was made in the case and that a second suspect is still being sought. He would not say who investigators believe pulled the trigger.

Larry Woods said he wants to ask the suspects why.
 
"You know, why do something like that? And especially the brother, who it's my understanding drove his sister away -- because he just put himself equal to the crime his sister did."
 
Initial reports indicated a woman may have pulled the trigger after a confrontation between a man and the victim. That confrontation followed a minor fender-bender between Byers' car and a Lincoln Navigator occupied by the suspects.
 
"For the accident that happened, it's incredible somebody would shoot someone for a car accident," Larry Woods said.
 
Jeanette Davis has had one previous run-in with the law -- a minor in possession of alcohol charge in Grand Rapids in 2006.
 
24 Hour News 8 tried tracking down her family at a home on Sheldon Avenue SE, but was turned away. On Monday, Grand Rapids police officers were also outside the home.
 
Byers' family in St. Louis told 24 Hour News 8 they were called earlier Tuesday by Grand Rapids police officials to tell them of the arrest.

GRPD detectives will meet with prosecutors on Wednesday to determine the exact charges.

"We're pleased with the status of the investigation," Belk said, "and I'm pleased with the performance of our detectives."

He also said he was grateful for all the tips given to the police about the case and to the news media for providing coverage.

Last Friday, authorities announced they had identified two people of interest in the case. Both people are in their 20s, and police said neither knew Byers.
