GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) - A suspicious container found near a college campus caused quite the concern in downtown Grand Rapids Friday morning.

Security staff from Spectrum Health Butterworth Hospital found the item around 4:30 a.m. near Ransom Avenue and Lyon Street NE.

The plastic bin had a top with these words on it -- MTC Please Dont Disturb Testing In Progress

So the hospital security staff called 911.

Grand Rapids police officers and a bomb squad arrived at the scene, and closed off several streets to begin an investigation.

There was also a report of a bomb threat being called in to the Ford Fieldhouse on the campus of Grand Rapids Community College. So the college closed its campus and put classes on a two-hour delay. Then officials later sent a notification that classes will resume after 11:30 a.m. and staff should report.

Ferris State University delayed classes at its Grand Rapids Community College campus until 10 a.m.

The parking lot used by Spectrum Health Butterworth Hospital was closed due to the affected closed streets. The hospital was fully operational during this time.

Then around 7:45 a.m., police cleared the scene after the bin was deemed safe, containing seismic testing equipment, accidentally left behind by a private contractor.

Police will talk with officials from that contractor's company about the incident.
