Suspect flees after rear-ending officer

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) - A man was arrested after he fled the scene where his vehicle rear-ended the personal vehicle of a police officer.

The off-duty Wyoming officer's vehicle was rear-ended around 8:30 p.m. Wednesday at the intersection of Burton Street and Century Avenue SW in Grand Rapids, according to police.

Instead of stopping, the suspect drove away, according to the Grand Rapids Police Department. The Wyoming officer followed the suspect's vehicle for a few blocks, at which point the suspect stopped and got out of the car.

The officer also exited his vehicle, identified himself and asked the suspect to stop and wait for on-duty officers to arrive.

A physical altercation ensued as the suspect tried to get back into his vehicle, police said.

The suspect eventually succeeded in getting into his car and drove away a second time.

He was found a few blocks away. He was arrested and will likely be charged with resisting arrest and drunk driving, police said.

The officer, who is a day-shift officer and been with the Wyoming Police Department for 16 years, sustained minimal injuries in the altercation with the suspect, according to GRPD.
