Teen shot, left on porch for 30 min

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) - The family of the 19-year-old found shot to death on the city's northeast side said he was in town to surprise his sister.

"He was supposed to have been coming down to surprise her for the open house," Lisa Johnson said. "But the surprise was he was dead."

Johnson's son Terrance Stokes was found dead on the back porch of a northeast-side residence at about 12:30 a.m. Saturday . The men who live there returned home to find him "slumped over."

"They didn't know him. They asked me if I knew who he was," a neighbor told 24 Hour News 8.  

Around 1 a.m. Saturday, police responded to the 200 block of Travis Street NE. He had been shot multiple times and was pronounced dead at the scene.

Stokes was from Grand Rapids but had been living in Detroit with his mother.

His family showed up to the scene Sunday morning, looking for clues to provide them answers.

"Terrance [doesn't] hang over this way. We stay on the southeast side of town," his cousin, Noneria Johnson, said. "How'd he get over here? Why was he over here? Who brought him into town?"

The shattered glass window is still visible from the driveway. Neighbors told 24 Hour News 8 they heard gunshots at midnight.

"We just figured it was fireworks. We heard probably five or six shots," neighbor Laura Witte told 24 Hour News 8 on Saturday.

Not long after, they realized a man had been shot in the head.

"He was laying on the stairs on his right side, kind of curled up a little bit," said Witte. "You couldn't see details or anything, but you could definitely tell he wasn't moving."

"They left Terrance laying there for 45 minutes," another cousin, Roshanna Johnson, said. "Terrance probably could've been saved if somebody would've did the right thing."

His family fears the worst. The quiet, unassuming 19-year-old didn't keep the best company, they said.

"He was set up," his mother said. "They [were] in a gang organization and I guess something went wrong or whatever and they [were] looking for him."

Police have not yet arrested anyone in connection with the death.
