GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) - A man who suffered life-threatening stab wounds early Sunday morning was found moaning in the front yard of an abandoned house on the southeast side of Grand Rapids.

Police were called to the home in the 300 block of Highland Street SE around 6:15 a.m. after nearby residents heard the man's moans.

A neighbor, who only wanted to be identified as Carlos, said he was sleeping around 6 a.m. Sunday when he was awoken by his dogs' barks. He looked out his window and saw nothing, but just as he was getting back in bed his dogs started barking again.

"And I get out here, actually on the  porch, and I can see a guy laying on the grass just mumbling and moving around," he said.

At first, Carlos thought the man was drunk.

"He tried to get up and he couldn't get up," he said.

Carlos soon realized something was wrong so he went over the victim.

"I kept asking him, 'What's your name; Are you OK? How are you doing?' He never answered, or he tried to answer, but I couldn't understand what he was saying," Carlos said. "And I can see a stain on his shirt like a blood stain, and I looked down and the sidewalk and there was a small puddle of blood."

Carlos called 911. The victim was rushed to Saint Mary's Health Care to undergo surgery and currently listed in critical but stable condition.

According to Carlos, there was blood on the porch of a nearby home, making it appear the victim made his way from the porch to the sidewalk.

The neighbor said when officers arrived they found a cut on his arm, and his stomach was cut open.

The victim, described by witnesses as Hispanic and around 25 years old, has been tentatively identified, but police have not released his name.

No one is in custody and the investigation continues. Anyone with information about this incident is asked to call the Grand Rapids Police Department at 616.456.3604 or Silent Observer at 616.774.2345.
