GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) - Police in Grand Rapids are investigating a fatal shooting that possibly resulted from a road rage incident.

Authorities received calls about 8:20 a.m. Tuesday.

A 24 Hour News 8 crew arrived at the scene near Lafayette Avenue and State Street SE and saw a male lying in the street. Rescue personnel performed CPR on the victim before transporting him to Saint Mary's Health Care where he passed away from a gunshot wound to the chest.

The victim was  identified as Lance Byers, a DHS employee who was on his way to work when the incident occurred.

No one is in custody at this time and police have not released any suspect(s) descriptions.

A man and his wife live nearby and saw what happened through their kitchen window. He told 24 Hour News 8 it started as a two-vehicle accident.

"Then she pointed out that they (two people in the vehicles) started fighting, and I was a little surprised. And I  looked over and saw two people going at it. The next thing we know we heard this pop noise and one of the people fighting jumped in what looked like a black or dark-colored (Lincoln) Navigator and drove away really quick."

The suspect vehicle has tinted windows, and man and woman inside, and left south from the scene, according to witnesses.

There is damage to the front of the victim's vehicle and the rear of the suspect's vehicle.

If you know anything about this crime you are asked to call the Grand Rapids Police Department at 616.456.3604 or Silent Observer at 616.774.2345.
