GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) - The Kent County Sheriff's Department called in Grand Rapids Police when a suspect inside a home on Baldwin SE on the southeast side of Grand Rapids wouldn't come out.

Investigators said he's a suspect in a series of home invasions in Kent County and they worried he had a cache of stolen weapons.

Officers with their guns drawn shielded themselves behind the house next door and prepared for an unpredictable and dangerous situation. Cam Canepa came home to all the commotion next door.

"You really really rethink what's going on next door," said Canepa. "I always thought it's a nice neighborhood with nothing wrong here. I've never had a problem, good neighbors, and now one is wanted and this happens.  It's surprising."

After several attempts, the man finally came out, put his hands in the air and surrendered.  Shortly after, a woman came out carrying a baby. A neighbor told 24 Hour News 8 she lives in the apartment with the suspect.

This case isn't over. After the arrest, GRPD's Special Response Team went in again with guns drawn, but didn't arrest anyone else. Investigators and detectives carried out loads of evidence including a flat screen television, a vacuum cleaner, and some items wrapped up and concealed.

With the crime tape up and a police chopper in the air, it was enough to put Congress Elementary School across the street on lockdown.

"It was scary.  I just wanted to make sure it had nothing to do with the school," said parent Brandy Rogers as she was picking up her 5-year-old son.

Kent County Sheriff's investigators are looking through the evidence and looking for another suspect in the home invasions. They said several weapons taken in the break-ins haven't been found.

The Grand Rapids police blocked Baldwin between Diamond and Dwight during the arrest, and the Michigan State Police was also at the scene.

On Saturday, authorities said 23-year-old Samuel Domonique Gonzales III was charged with 2nd degree home invasion and being a felon in possession of a firearm.
