GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) - Three men were stabbed during an incident on Grand Rapids' southeast side Tuesday evening.
A woman's ex-boyfriend and his brother confronted the woman's current boyfriend at a home near Jefferson Avenue and Delaware Street, and the three men started to fight, police told 24 Hour News 8.
One of the men pulled out a knife, resulting in the three men being stabbed around 9:30 p.m.
The ex-boyfriend and his brother got into a car and drove away from the scene. The pair crashed the vehicle into a sign at the New Life Church of God in Christ, about a block away near Jefferson Avenue and Highland Street.
The men exited the vehicle and were confronted by people who were leaving a church service that just ended. The attendees of the service tried to aid the stabbing victims.
Police said the situation could have been worse.
"The car came right up on the lawn. We're very lucky no one from the church was injured," said GRPD Sgt. Matt Janiskee.
The third stabbing victim was found at a residence near where the stabbing occurred. This person was the first to call 911. Minutes later, police were told of the crash at the church.
The stabbing victims were taken to a hospital. One of the men suffered what was believed to be critical injuries but his condition has since improved. All three will survive.
There is no word yet if charges will be filed in this incident.
The Grand Rapids Police Department Major Case Team is investigating. You are asked to call police at 616.456.3604 or Silent Observer at 616.774.2345 if you have more information.
