GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) - An 18-year-old male was shot and killed after answering a door of a Grand Rapids southeast side residence Tuesday evening.

The victim is Greg John Woods Jr., his mother told 24 Hour News 8 Wednesday afternoon. She said the incident was gang related and retaliation, and that her son was set up. She said her son was a member of the Bemis Street gang. She said she wants the retaliation to stop.

The shooting happened around 7:50 p.m. Tuesday in the 700 block of Neland Avenue SE. The victim answered a knock at a door and was immediately shot, police at the scene told 24 Hour News.

A handful of other people in the house rushed the victim to a hospital and called police via OnStar to report the shooting.

Around 10:40 p.m, authorities said Woods had died at the hospital, despite undergoing surgery.

Grand Rapids police set up a perimeter around the residence, taping off streets, shortly after the shooting.

Police believe the suspect or suspects may have left the scene in a vehicle, and remain at-large.

"We have had recently a call of shots being fired at the house or at the general area several days ago," said Grand Rapids Police Capt. Eric Payne.

Neighbors said they are fed up with violence in their community.

"We just had a meeting tonight. We just discussed there were 95 shots fired in December," one neighbor told 24 Hour News 8. "Purpose of what?"

Police originally identified the victim as 19 years old, but family members told 24 Hour News 8 he was 18.

If have you any more information about this incident you are asked to call the Grand Rapids Police Department at 616.456.3604 or Silent Observer at 616.774.2345.
