NBAs Chris Kaman donates toys in GR

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) - Dozens of families lined up at Burton Elementary School Monday morning for free toys donated by Dallas Mavericks center Chris Kaman.

Kaman, who attended Tri-Unity Christian High School in Wyoming and then Central Michigan University, and his brother grew up in the neighborhood and he was looking for a way to give back, Mike Kaman told 24 Hour News 8.

The event was a surprise to most of the people contacted by phone on Friday.

The school's principal said the giveaway teaches valuable lessons about community.

"I think it is pivotal as a parent that you should let your child know that there is so much that you cn do to make our society a better place, and one of them is volunteering and doing what you can to make it a better place for everybody," said Ana Aleman-Putnam.

Chris Kaman was not able to attend the event. He played a game in Dallas Sunday night, scoring 10 points and grabbing three rebounds in a 129-91 loss to San Antonio.
