GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) - "The Avengers" made over $600 million, "The Dark Knight Rises" made almost $450 million, the last Twilight movie made over $286 million, but a movie filmed in Grand Rapids in 2010 made less than $300 at the box office in 2012.
"Playback" , with actor Christian Slater, made a total of $264 while airing at the box office, according to BoxOfficeMojo.com .
Part of the reason for the low amount might have to do with the number of theaters "Playback" played in; the movie played in only one theater in 2012. In comparison, "Avengers", "Dark Knight" and "Twilight" played in over 4,000 theaters during their box office runs.
"Playback" had Slater playing a "jaded, gritty cop who may not be who he appears." The plot involved a group of high school students that unwittingly unlock an evil from their town's infamous past.
According to 24 Hour News 8 movie blogger Aaron Lafferty , other actors in the film included Ambyr Childers, Dorien Davies, Toby Hemingway, Jonathon Keltz and Jennifer Missoni. It was produced by John M. Bennett and Lawrence Robbins and the film is written and directed by Michael A. Nickles.
More than 100 West Michigan residents were hired as extras and 15 crew members who worked on the film are from West Michigan.
"Playback" was not the film that earned the least amount of money at the box office in 2012; that honor went to the film "The Ghastly Love of Johnny X".
Other movies released in 2012 that were filmed in Michigan fared better in the theaters than "Playback". "Touchback", filmed primarily in Coopersville and starring Kurt Russell , aired in 69 theaters and made $204,232 at the box office. "Virginia", starring Jennifer Connelly and Ed Harris , made $12,728 in the five theaters it played in.
