GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) - One person was taken into police custody after an hour-long standoff on Grand Rapids' southeast side Tuesday.

The incident started around 5:30 p.m. when police received a call from two people who said a man had pulled a gun on them at a house on Shelby Street, according to GRPD Capt. Eric Payne.

Police then followed a vehicle matching the description of one they believed the suspect to be in and made a traffic stop, but the suspect was not in it.

Instead, the driver of that car told police he had dropped off the suspect at his mother's house in the 1000 block of Cass Avenue SE.

Police then surrounded that house, at which point the standoff began.

The Special Response Team and a SWAT unit were called in and a command post was set up. Police cleared the surrounding houses, telling residents to leave the area or stay in their homes.

After about an hour, the man surrendered to authorities. Police said he is a suspect in a weekend shooting.

Authorities said they did not need a search warrant because the homeowner cooperated with them and let them into the house.

The area of Cass Avenue and Delaware Street was closed for the duration of the standoff.
