GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) - A woman told 24 Hour News 8 that her friend was shot in the chest and then robbed while visiting her early Thursday morning.
Nicole Vermaas said the victim was walking in the sidewalk in the 600 block of Cass Avenue SE in Grand Rapids about 3:40 a.m., and went to knock on her door.
That is when she said two teenage males approached her friend, shot him and then robbed him. The suspects then ran from the scene.
Police officers and a K-9 unit were called but could not find the suspects whose descriptions have not been released.
The victim -- a 39-year-old man -- was taken to a hospital for treatment to non-life threatening injuries.
The home where the shooting occurred is divided into apartments. Vermaas said two of her young children and another baby were sleeping on a couch inside the apartment near the window where the victim was shot.
"You got your kids sitting there looking at you, and your friend's sitting on the front porch just bleeding because he's screaming...he's shot. Do you know how devastating that is to your children?" said Vermaas.
