GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) - Over 2,000 people came out Saturday to walk in support those battling breast cancer.

The 12th annual American Cancer Society's Making Strides Against Breast Cancer 5K walk went thru downtown Grand Rapids. People of all ages came out, despite the chilly temperatures, and walked to raise money for research.

According to the American Cancer Society, " The American Cancer Society uses the dollars raised through Making Strides events to fund cutting-edge research leading to the discovery of lifesaving treatments, advocate for all women to have access to mammograms and treatments – regardless of income – and to provide free programs and services that improve the quality of life for cancer patients and their families in more than 3,400 communities across the country."

The American Cancer Society states that more than 192,000 people will be diagnosed with breast cancer in 2009, and an estimated 40,610 will die from the disease.

The Grand Rapids event raised $135,000. If you'd like to donate to the American Cancer Society, you can contact them at 1-800-227-2345 or visit www.cancer.org for more information.
