GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) - Nearly 1,000 people marched the streets of Grand Rapids with signs, T-shirts and hoodies in support for the unarmed Florida teen killed by a neighborhood watchman.
The large group showed up to support Trayvon Martin's family -- and call for justice. Martin's killer has yet to be arrested .
"We need to lift Trayvon up so that's why we came here today," Maleeka Conley said.
"We're tired of injustice issues," Marcel Gamble said. "Enough has been said. We talk enough on the internet, now it's actually time to get up and do something."
The route was approximately three miles, from Martin Luther King Jr. Park to Rosa Parks Circle in Grand Rapids.
Organizers told 24 Hour News 8 they hoped the message of peace spread throughout the community, regardless of ethnicity.
"I'm here to support and show them I stand for the family of Trayvon Martin," Yvette Orr said. "[I want] to let them know they're not alone in this loss. We share their pain and we're marching for that cause."
The death of Trayvon Martin seems to have forced the Grand Rapids community to look inward.
"Let's stop the violence in our own neighborhood against each other," one man shouted over a megaphone.
"When a white man kills a black guy, it's a war," Duke Turley said. "But... black kids [are] killing each other everyday and no one says anything. Hopefully this will be the end to all of that."
Marcel Gamble hoped to inspire his peers and the generation coming behind him:
"The message that I want people to take away is that ‘This is important’ If we don't do anything about it, who will?"
