Hundreds flock to see Ford burial site

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) - Hundreds came out to the Ford Presidential Museum as the public was let in to view the burial site for the first time Saturday.

A handful of people gathered outside the gates of the burial site early in the morning before it was opened.

They came to see the first lady resting now at her husbands side.

"My mom wanted to...pay our respects and see all the beautiful flowers and the museum and sign the book." Coopersville resident Roxy Wienard said.

Neatly displayed outside the front wall was a place for the public to share and remember thoughts and memories of Mr. and Mrs. Ford.

A small sign of their admiration for Betty; a woman who's impact on life and health looms large even after her death.

"She had an eventful life, and the thing I remember the most is they showed that picture of her dancing on the table at the end. I thought that was pretty cool." Wienard said.

While this past week was filled with the bustle of ceremony as Betty's body was flown in from Palm Springs, Saturday morning was marked only by the songs of birds and a fountain's cascade.

A fitting and peaceful rest after a life of service.

Kevin Brown said "The museum is just beautiful. It's a wonderful place to bring any tourist or any family member that may be from out of town. It's a great destination spot for Grand Rapids."

Museum officials say all gifts left outside the front wall will be cataloged and some may be used in later displays.
