HIV-spreader may have Calif. victims

Smith lived in San Diego between 1999 and 2007

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) - The man who claimed he intentionally had unprotected sex with thousands in order to infect them with HIV may have had victims beyond West Michigan.

A station in San Diego, California, heard from a woman who recognized Smith during his time there.

Records show Smith lived in the San Diego area between 1999 and 2007.

Smith told police he infected thousands through unprotected sex and drug use.  It is unclear how many victims Smith did in fact infect with HIV and when he began targeting unsuspecting victims.

So far there is no word of victims in California, but word is just starting to spread.

David Dean Smith's attorney, Richard E. Zambon of Grand Rapids, talked with MSNBC and said he plans on "exploring all options" in defending Smith, saying specifically that "I am concerned about his mental health."

Zambon said he hadn't yet seen all of the police and medical records in the case and couldn't talk about specifics, but he said the law under which Smith was charged is a "relatively new statute with not many cases having interpreted" it, meaning few court precedents have been established.
