GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) - An 8-year-old girl died in a Sunday afternoon hit-and-run crash that injured several others and may have involved a drunk driver.
The crash happened at around 2 p.m. Sunday at the intersection of Hall Street and Buchanan Avenue after the victims had left family members home and were in the area to head home.
We're told the victims are from the Detroit area.
The suspects were traveling in a Ford Explorer and headed north on Buchanan when they hit the family car that was traveling west on Hall Street.
The at-fault driver behind the wheel of an SUV ran a red light and crashed into a small car carrying six people.
The girl died and five others were taken to the hospital to be treated for non life-threatening injuries.
There were four children in the back seat including the 8-year-old victim. A 10-year-old and 4-year-old remain in the hospital Sunday night.
After the crash, the driver of the SUV and his front seat passenger got out of the vehicle they were in and ran away from the scene.
A third driver that had also been involved in the crash was able to run after the suspects and assist police in tracking them down.
Two suspects were arrested and are lodged in the Kent County jail pending charges.
The Hall and Buchanan intersection was closed for a few hours as accident reconstructionist evaluated the scene.
