GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) - A Grand Rapids police officer was hospitalized Monday after his cruiser crunched into a utility pole on the city's southeast side.
The officer hit the pole around 8 p.m. Monday near the corner of Eastern Avenue and Ardmore Street.
A GRPD spokesperson told 24 Hour News 8 the crash occurred as the officer was responding to a call of shots fired in an area of a large group of people.
The department spokesperson said the officer swerved to avoid another vehicle and struck the pole.
The officer driving the vehicle was taken to the hospital with a head injury requiring staples but has since been released.
The department spokesperson said on Tuesday, the GRPD Special Services Unit will follow up the investigation done by the supervisor on scene.
A gun was found at the area where shots were reportedly fired, according to the spokesman.
