GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) - Grand Rapids firefighters and city officials reached a deal on a new labor contract that calls for a four-year wage freeze, higher health care premiums and reduced pensions for new hires.
The deal was announced Tuesday morning.
Anyone hired after January 10, 2012 will receive lesser pension benefits. All current and future employees will need to pay more for their health care premiums.
Overall, the changes represent an 8.2% reduction in personnel costs each year.
The contract was negotiated between City Manager Greg Sundstrom and William Smith, the president of Firefighters Local 366.
In a statement Smith said, "All involved in this process, including the City's Bargaining team, worked diligently to provide the best possible outcome. Our membership has answered the question by approving this new agreement. I applaud our local's membership for their dedication. And I truly appreciate the City Commission's support, and that of our citizens."
