Fewer pack GR park early for fireworks

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) - People headed out early Ah-Nab-Awen Park to get a good seat for the fireworks show -- but not as many as in years past, likely because of the heat.

Some started staking out their spot to watch the Grand Rapids fireworks show as early as Tuesday. Others showed up Wednesday morning.

"The reflecting pool in front of the museum was used a lot by the kids," said Chris Segard, who spent the Fourth of July at Ah-Nab-Awen park. "Security had to remind them it's not a swimming pool."

When temperatures nearly hit triple digits, even sitting and waiting became a test of determination. Segard got to the park at 7 a.m. She noticed the heat took a toll on the crowds.

"Usually it would fill up by one, two o'clock," said Segard.

Instead it filled in closer to 7 p.m. -- or half a day after she got there.

"A lot of people come really early, but it's hot out," said Brooke Ball.

Ball arrived three hours later than is her custom because of the heat, but still got a good seat because her late was still early by the day's standards.

"This year's not as bad as last year," said Ball. "I think it's because it's so hot out."

After a hard day's work that's supposed to be vacation, the fireworks and celebration are the reward.

"It's a holiday for me when everybody else is having a good time," said Segard.
