GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) - Grand Rapids voters will see two proposals on the November ballot. The first suggests eliminating the city's elected comptroller position.
The comptroller audits city spending and makes sure the bills are paid.
Current Comptroller Donijo DeJonge says the duties of her office can be handled by city's chief financial officer.
But eliminating the position requires a change in the city charter, which has to be approved by voters.
DeJonge says getting rid of her position, along with adding a stronger independent audit function at city hall, will save taxpayers money.
"Could it be $100,000 within the first year? Absolutely. But also it goes hand-in-hand with the audit function that I proposed," DeJonge told 24 Hour News 8. "The independent audit function that the city commission embraced. And that's a new policy, and you'll see massive savings organization-wide within the first three years if that gets passed."
