Fireworks law sparks changes this 4th

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) - You can expect to see some super-sized family fireworks shows under our state's new fireworks law.

Grand Rapids, Wyoming, Kentwood and other communities have passed their own ordinances, meaning you can set off fireworks on the holidays as well as the day before and the day after.

If you're planning on adding some sparkle to your celebration, it's going to cost you a little extra.

There is an extra 6 percent safety tax on the newly legalized fireworks.

That money will go back to the state to pay for the extra responders that may be needed due to the aerials.

You can start setting off fireworks as early as Tuesday evening.

This year's changes have sparked competition with firework vendors.

"Here on Alpine we have 10 other tents that we're competing with so it makes it a lot more difficult to do the kind of sales we would have expected this year,"  Rebecca Gonyon of TNT Fireworks said.

You must now be 18 to buy any fireworks in our state.
