GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) - Grand Rapids Mayor George Heartwell, former Mayor John Logie, current city commissioners and State Rep. Brandon Dillon all appeared at a press conference put on by organizers of an effort to decriminalize marijuana in the city.
Decriminalize GR wants a marijuana offense to go from a misdemeanor to a civil infraction, essentially ticketing those caught with pot.
The committee obtained more than 10,000 signatures to get it on the November ballot.
"We are so happy to have the outcry of support that we've had," said the group's director Michael Tuffelmire. "We've had no public opposition; we don't sense public opposition and so, having so many public officials, business owners, city leaders, regular citizens for this makes us happy and we're glad."
Supporters of the effort say it will save taxpayer dollars and free up police to focus on more serious crimes.
