GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) - Three people have been arrested in connection to a Thursday afternoon shooting in downtown Grand Rapids.
A man was shot in the leg a little after 2 p.m. near the intersection of Cherry Street SW and Ionia Avenue.
Police say the incident started when a group of young men in their late teens or early 20s got into a fight that may have started at a school and then continued at the Rapid Central Station.
The group dispersed and two of the men involved were walking along Cherry Street when three suspects drove up in an SUV and opened fire.
Witnesses said between one and three shots were fired.
One of the men who was walking was shot in the leg. He headed north on Ionia to an alley north of Oakes Street, which is where he was found by police.
The victim was taken to a hospital with minor injuries, but refused to cooperating with police, they said.
The three suspects were arrested around 3:30 p.m. in the 1400 block of Paris Avenue SE.
"The patrol officers that know this area were somewhat familiar with a vehicle that kind of matched the description given by the witnesses," GRPD Sgt. Mike Maycroft said on the scene. "They were able to come down here and actually see the vehicle, see it was occupied. They did a high-risk stop on the vehicle and that's when they arrested the suspects that were in the vehicle."
Authorities are fairly sure they have the correct suspects because they look like individuals seen on surveillance images from the bus station.
Police are looking into whether nearby businesses have surveillance video of the shooting itself.
