Beer festivals galore in GR area

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) - Michigan ranks fifth in the nation when it comes to the number of breweries, micro-breweries and brewpubs.

The beer industry in West Michigan is booming, and breweries have a huge economic impact on the state economy, bringing in more than $130 million.

There are more than a dozen craft breweries in Grand Rapids, which was awarded the title Beer City USA in 2012. The city could win it again this year.

Founders Brewing Co. in Grand Rapids is in the midst of a $26 million expansion, bringing in more equipment and more jobs.

"Cool Brew. Hot Eats." began Feb. 18 and ends March 2 in Grand Rapids in which chefs at 57 restaurants make dishes that use beer as an ingredient.

The 2013 Winter Beer Festival is Saturday at Fifth Third Ballpark in Comstock Park. This event is sold out.
