Alger 5K features costumes, fun

More than 700 people running in costume

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich (WOOD) - More than 700 people hit the pavement for the 4th Annual Alger Heights Halloween 5K. The unique race features many of the participants making their way through the southeast side neighborhood's streets in full costume.

Money raised from the run/walk will be donated to Kids' Food Basket , MDA of West Michigan and Fit Kids 360.

1996 Olympic Miler Paul McMullen, who currently lives in Grand Haven, took part in the race encouraging runners of all ages to do their best and have fun.

Donald Richmond of Portland came in first with a time of 16:16. Richmond was followed by Christopher Gregory of Dowling with a time of 16:39 and Matt Sicilia of Grand Rapids with a time of 17:17.

The top women finishers were Stacey Brander of Grandville 21:21, Melissa Casarez of Lowell 21:39 and Laurel Dawson of Muskegon 22:08.

Awards were given for best times and best costumes.
