Plan for center at MLK Park needs money

GRAND RAIPDS, Mich. (WOOD) - Efforts to develop a youth center at Grand Rapids' Martin Luther King Jr Park continue despite a struggling fund-raising campaign.

City Commissioners approved an extension to an agreement allowing the Concerned Citizens Council to turn the current city-owned bathhouse at the park into the youth center.

The agreement was first signed in 2008. But organizers say that effort is "woefully short" of the goal to raise the $1.5 million needed to build the center.

Organizers told city commissioners they won't move ahead with any portion of the plan until they have the full amount raised.

City officials said there are no plans to make any improvements to the building using city funds in the near future.
