GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) - Late Saturday night Kimberly Cheyne, wife of Kris Cheyne, e-mailed a statement to 24-Hour News 8 about the events her husband was involved in Thursday.
Below is the complete statement Cheyne issued:
"I want to say I am so sorry to the wife, children, and family, of Officer Trevor Slot. I, like Officer Slot’s wife, am also battling cancer. I am completely devastated that my husband had a role in Officer Slot’s death.
"I am not going to make excuses for my husband’s behavior on Thursday because there are none. I am deeply troubled and I struggle with the dichotomy of Kris’s behavior on that tragic Thursday morning with the sweet, caring, husband and father to his children that I knew him to be.
"The same man that committed this heinous crime on Thursday is the same man that stood by me through surgeries, chemo treatments, and sickness. He was gentle with all of his children, and even sweetly fed, played, and tucked our son into bed every night while I was recovering from various cancer treatments.
"He was a great husband, father, son, brother, and friend. This is why I will never understand why Kris chose to do what he did.
"The decisions of Kris and DJ LaFave have left three families and this community mourning the loss of their loved ones and for that I am deeply sorry.
"Kris’s mom and family have expressed the same and asked me to convey the same message.
"Deepest Regrets and Sympathies,
"Kimberly Cheyne"
