Waterslide and music bring 20k downtown

'Crowds well behaved,' no arrests or injuries

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) - Two major weekend events in downtown Grand Rapids brought about 20,000 people to the central city, the city's special events coordinator said.

Todd Tofferi told 24 Hour News 8 the "crowds were well behaved" and made the downtown alive with activity on what has traditionally been a quiet, late summer weekend.

On Saturday and Sunday, the world's largest waterslide brought between 8,000 - 10,000 people to Lyon Street hill. On Sunday, another 8,000 - 10,000 attended a country music show at Rosa Parks Circle.

No injuries or arrests were reported at either event.

The cost of services provided by the city for the Lyon Street slide, like water, security and permits, are still being added up. Tofferi hopes to have the bill tallied by the end of the week.

As is the case with all special events, the sponsors are responsible for 100% of all those costs.
