GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) - Equipped with miniature shovels, hundreds of elementary school students chipped in to launch construction of the new Grand Rapids Christian Elementary School.
Students from all Grand Rapids Christian elementary schools - Oakdale, Millbrook, Evergreen, Creston and Rockford Christian schools - were involved in the Tuesday night ceremony.
The event included an ice cream social, launched the public phase of the "All God's Children Campaign," and outlined plans for restoration of Pontiac Park.
The school is $1 million shy of its goal, but hopes to raise that soon, along with additional money to fund scholarships.
"We're real excited now to bring it out to the community to the public portion of the campaign," said Lon Swartzentruber, the executive director of the foundation. "So all of our family and friends can get involved."
Grand Rapids Christian hopes to have its new school completed by next year. It will be built on the site of Grand Rapids' old Iroquois Middle School.
