Police arrested a man who they say threatened to harm his wife and ex-girlfriend, and held officers at bay during a five-hour standoff.

Officers were first called at around 10 p.m. Sunday to the Super 8 Motel at 4855 28th Street SE in Grand Rapids. That is where a 49-year-old man was living with his wife of four weeks. According to police, the man was in a drug-induced rage and threatened her with a knife. She was unharmed.

He then took her vehicle and fled to the Breton Meadows Condominium Complex near 44th Street and Breton Road where his ex-girlfriend lives.

The man broke out several windows of her condo and threatened to injure his ex-girlfriend. She was able to escape unharmed and called police.

Officers arrived and talked to the suspect, who is from Grand Rapids and has an extensive criminal background. He has several felony convictions and is currently on probation out of the 17th Circuit Court of Kent County.

He refused to come out of the condo, saying he didn't want to go back to prison.

The Kent County Sheriff's Department, Kentwood Police Department and a SWAT team were then called to the scene at around 11:15 p.m. The man barricaded himself inside the condo and a standoff ensued.

Police evacuated residents in neighboring condos, surrounded the building and set up a perimeter to make sure the suspect didn't escape.

Shortly after 4 a.m. Monday, a search warrant was obtained and the SWAT team went into the condo and found the suspect passed out on a couch. He was taken into custody, then to a hospital for a medical evaluation, and will later go to jail.
