GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) - Thousands of people flooded downtown Grand Rapids on a sunny Saturday afternoon with chalk in hand.

They came out for "The Downtown GR Sidewalk Chalk Flood," an event hoping to wash the entire city in chalk.

The event was organized in part on the social networking site Facebook, you can find a direct link to the event here.  As of Saturday afternoon, the event had more than 5,000 confirmed guests and more than 12,000 thinking about attending.  The sunny skies and seventies may have added ot the turnout.

Some of the event rules from  the Facebook page include:

  • Only sidewalk chalk! no sidewalk paint, or spray paint, anything that doesn't come off with water.
  • No drawing on private property, only public areas
  • No religious, political, or drawings that could be offensive. This isn’t about someone’s individual personal beliefs but more so a choir of people making something all together as a whole.

The event runs from noon until 5 p.m. Saturday, but could stretch longer because of the nice weather.
