GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) - A 16-year-old male student fired a shot as he walked out of Creston High School on Monday afternoon, according to investigators with the Grand Rapids Police Department and Grand Rapids Public Schools.
The student is in custody, investigators said. Neither police nor school officials believe anyone was struck by the bullet, which was fired in the air, they said.
Detectives are interviewing the student right now and charges will depend on what they learn from talking with the suspect, a Grand Rapids Police captain told 24 Hour News 8.
The incident occurred as school was being dismissed. A student, who spoke to 24 Hour News 8 with her mother's permission, said she was leaving the school building for a cross-country team run when it happened.
"My friends were standing by the door and then the door shut I heard the noise," junior Sammy Hight said. "They all slammed the doors shut and backed up."
Her mother, Jennie Hight, said she believes the district did everything possible to protect the safety of students.
Investigators are not sure where the gun came from but continue to investigate.
