GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) - On Thursday, 15 former shipmates of Gerald R. Ford - who served with him on the USS Monterey - toured his presidential museum as part of the annual reunion of Monterey soldiers.

President Ford was stationed on the ship in 1943 and 1944.

The group toured the museum, obtained exclusive access to the collection storage area, which holds more than 18,000 artifacts, and viewed a 20 minute video on Ford's legacy.

"I knew he'd become president, and he was a terrific guy," said John Fifer, who served with Ford as a shipmate. "And that's why I wanted to do this."

A replica of the naval ship is on permanent display at the museum, along with Ford's Navy uniform and the maps he used while in service.
