GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) - David Mayo, the longtime Grand Rapids Press sports columnist, was sentenced Tuesday to three years probation for growing marijuana in his home.
He was also fined $5,000 and ordered to perform 240 hours of community service.
Mayo will return to the paper beginning Sunday, according to The Grand Rapids Press.
He said he hopes his fans will forgive him, see past his flaws and continue to support The Grand Rapids Press.
"...And some people will never forgive me," Mayo said.
Just days after vowing to fight the charges, he pleaded guilty to the charges. Mayo's wife, Denise, also pleaded guilty to running a drug house. The couple acquiesced to a deadline imposed by The Press to have his legal issues wrapped by June 30 or lose his job.
