GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) - A man accused of holding his mother hostage in their apartment for days has been found competent to stand trial.

In June 2012, Joshua Hoffman allegedly held his mother captive for more than a week in their Stonebrook Apartments home. He surrendered after a several-hours standoff with Grand Rapids authorities.

He now faces charges of domestic violence and unlawful imprisonment.

His mother wrote in a 2002 petition to have Hoffman committed because he has severe mood swings and diagnosed with severe bipolar disorder with psychosis.

Testimony from other witnesses will continue at a forthcoming preliminary hearing in Grand Rapids district court.
