GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) - The Grand Rapids Fire Department has appointed a new acting fire chief after the retirement of John VanSolkema.
VanSolkema announced last month his retirement, after 35 years of service.
"Chief VanSolkema's tenure as chief was a time of innovation and growth for the fire department that will set the stage for our future," Interim City Manager Eric DeLong said in a statement. "We are indebted to him for his service to our community."
Deputy Fire Chief Laura Knapp took his place beginning Wednesday.
Knapp has been with the fire department since 1984 and has distinguished herself with strong performances and promotions, continued the statement. She was named GRFD's first female battalion chief in 1999.
"Acting Chief Knapp has been a strong performer throughout her career and has the skill set, demeanor, aptitudes and outlook I was seeking for this critical assignment," DeLong said. "I expect her to provide effective leadership for the mean and women of our fire department as we take our next steps forward together."
