Heartwell leads Labor Day bridge walk

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) - Grand Rapids Mayor George Heartwell led many walkers in the annual Grand Crossings Bridge Walk on Labor Day in his city Monday morning.

Everybody met at Ah-Nab-Awen Park near Pearl Street and Scribner Avenue NW.

Participants had the opportunity to walk as many as five miles through the downtown area -- the equivalent of the Mackinac Bridge, and cross more than just one bridge on a new route.

The route was wheelchair- and stroller-accessible, and appropriate for all fitness levels. No sign-up was necessary. Snacks were provided by Spartan Stores.

"It's all about community, it's all about family and it's all about health," Heartwell told 24 Hour News 8. "This is great event and we look forward to it each year."

Grand Crossings is part of the Active Michigan Summer initiative organized by the Governor’s Council on Physical Fitness, Health and Sports.
