GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) - The three city swimming pools have kept thousands cool since they opened July 5.
Attendance for the first two weeks was 18,919, according to Parks and Recreation Director Jay Steffen. Of those, 14,873 swimmers were kids 17 and under.
"This amount exceeds the average attendance for the last two years, when comparing the first two weeks," said Steffen.
Lowering the temperatures at the pools and sending staff home when they're not busy have helped keep the pools within their budgets. Meijer also donated 750 bathing suits and towels.
A 10-day fund drive raised the money needed to open the pools at Briggs and M.L. King parks. A third pool at Richmond Park opened with donations from local businessman Bob Sullivan.
