Meth lab busts unusual in Grand Rapids, police say

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) - Grand Rapids police busted a methamphetamine lab late Friday afternoon.

The meth lab in the 1100 block of Broadway Avenue NW was found around 5 p.m. after a search warrant was executed at a residence by GRPD's Special Response Team.

The active meth lab was in the basement of a rented house that now houses apartments, according to GRPD Sgt. Matt Ungrey.

Of the six people found in the two apartments at the residence, two were arrested: One for allegedly cooking the meth and the other for allegedly using it.

Sgt. Ungrey told 24 Hour News 8 that the bust was a big deal for GRPD. He said meth busts are unusual, though not unheard of in Grand Rapids. There have been only a handful in the last year, he said. GRPD usually deals with other types of drugs.

Christina Strevel, who lives next door to the house that was raided, told 24 Hour News 8 she moved in just last week. She said she came home Friday with her boyfriend to find police swarming the area.

"It's a meth lab? Right next door? It's scary," she said. "I know meth labs can blow up and that's right next door."

She said she was worried about what could have happened on the busy neighborhood street.

Michigan State Police were called in perform HazMat clean up, according to GRPD.

The house will remain condemned until safety workers clear it. The remaining renters have been evicted.
