GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) - The Grand Rapids Police Department is pitching in to stock dangerously depleted shelves at Mel Trotter Ministries.

It is projected Mel Trotter only has about five weeks of food left on the shelves.

Starting Wednesday, there will be blue donation barrels all over Grand Rapids - at city hall, the police department, the fire houses and every Panera Bread location. They will remain throughout July.

"I've never seen a time where the need has been so great," Grand Rapids Police Lt. Ralph Mason said. "I mean, we've got so many people out of work, we've got so many people who are really depressed, and people need help."

Last year was the first time Mel Trotter didn't have to turn families away. If enough people donate, they'll be able to extend that run.
