GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) - A Grand Rapids couple, managers of dozens of rental properties, are accused by federal government of not telling their renters about lead-based paint in their units.
Children in at least five units became ill, according to court documents reviewed by 24 Hour News 8.
Jose and Guillermina Sierra manage 67 units. They were given notice of deficiencies at some of their properties between 2000 and 2003. They were told by the Kent County Health Department that children living in their units had elevated blood levels because of lead-based paint.
The civil lawsuit wants a judgment against the couple and an order forcing them to comply. Current federal law requires landlords to tell their tenants about any lead-based paints in their units, and provide written information about it in the lease.
It's alleged the Sierras did not disclose the health hazard to their tenants.
24 Hour News 8 will continue to follow this story.
