GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) - Connie Bohatch is one of the 72,000 commuters who drive the now shut down stretch of I-196 through downtown each day. Considering the potential problems on this first day, her commute from Cascade Township was relatively smooth.
Bohatch works at City Hall and did not pre-plan her trip. She knows the city and figured she'd adjust her route when it was necessary.
Like Monday.
Her route took her from Cascade Road to Fulton all the way downtown. She hit slowdowns at the intersections with Fuller and Diamond.
"Here's where it's going to be problematic," she told 24 Hour News 8, " because there's some road construction up here, too."
West of College Avenue was backed up as well. But she made the commute in 30 minutes for a ride that usually takes no more than 20.
"I think it was a little better than I expected," she said. "I did leave a couple of minutes late. So I did get to work a few minutes late. But it reallly wasn't as bad as I thought it was going to be. Hopefully it stays this way throughout the summer and people wont have too many problems."
