GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (AP) - Michigan State University has announced a $5 million challenge grant for the new Grand Rapids campus of its medical school.

Michigan State said Tuesday that Richard and Helen DeVos have pledged to match up to $5 million in gifts for the Secchia Center of the College of Human Medicine.

The $90 million center in downtown Grand Rapids is scheduled for dedication Sept. 10.

The first 100 first-year students and 50 second-year students begin their medical studies at the center this fall.

Michigan State says it has received $39 million toward its $50 million fundraising goal for the center.

Richard DeVos is a co-founder of the direct sales company Amway.
