GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) - It was a busy summer at the city pools, thanks in large part to the heat and the largesse of Bob Sullivan and other donors.
In 42 days of swimming at three city pools this summer, 47,924 people took a dip to cool off and have fun. That total beat the 2009 tally, when six pools were open.
Each day, an average of 380 people used one of the three pools, compared to 135 per day in 2009, 204 in 2008 and 210 in 2007.
The city was not going to open the pools this year until businessman Bob Sullivan stepped forward and offered to fund the pool at Richmond Park. Then a concerted effort helped open two other pools with private donations.
