GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) - Grand Rapids City Clerk Lauri Parks expects about 12 to 14% voter turnout Tuesday, she told 24 Hour News 8 late Tuesday afternoon.
As of 4:30 p.m. to 5 p.m., turnout stood at around 7%, she said. Polls are open until 8 p.m.
City voters are choosing two people to sit on the Grand Rapids school board -- and they're among those selecting two people for the Grand Rapids Community College Board of Trustees.
The Rapid is also asking voters in Grand Rapids -- and five other Kent County cities -- to decide on a property tax increase to pay for improved service and a new bus rapid transit line.
Parks said the predicted turnout is similar to other elections in which the school district, community college and the Rapid all had items on the ballot, such as in 2007 and 2009. Turnout is expected to be higher than school-only elections, which the clerk said tended to draw between 6 and 8% of voters.
Kent County Elections Director Susan DeSteiguer told 24 Hour News 8 late Tuesday afternoon she did not yet have good data on turnout outside the city.
24 Hour News 8 will post election results Tuesday night.
