GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) - A bird nest built in the attic next to a light is the likely cause of a fire that caused $600,000 damage to Our Lady of Aglona church in Grand Rapids Tuesday.
Iinvestigators found charred nesting materials against a recessed, seldom-used light fixture in the attic of the church at 507 Broadway NW. The light had been turned on most of the day, and the heat from it against the nest caused the fire.
The 1 16-year-old building generally held up well, including a large, stained-glass window on the west wall, which is the worst-damaged wall in the fire.
Within an hour of the fire , crews were able to start saving some of the artifacts from the church that has been in Grand Rapids since the 1960s.
The building was sold about one month ago to Grace Legacy Builders Pastor Bruce Kuiper, who said he plans to continue renovations despite Tuesday's blaze.
