GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) - Blare Gooch wanted to do something for the people of Haiti, something that would bring a smile to their faces.
So the 7th-grader at St. Thomas the Apostle is organizing a Teddy Bear drive through his school and Facebook.
Gooch, 12, is one-quarter Haitian. He said his fledgling effort has the support of his friends, and he thinks it will be successful. In fact, he's donating Brown Bear, his companion since he was 3, to the drive.
His parents, Johrone and Lisa, also purchased a new bear for the drive.
If you want to donate, you can drop off the Teddy Bears at the school, 1429 Wilcox SE, or at Hair Force, 1557 Michigan Avenue NE. Monetary donations for shipment of the bears -- which won't be done until the crush of needed supplies is met -- can also be made at either location.
The bears will be sent through a Catholic relief organization.
